Welcome to the Jumble: Organizing Apps

1:21

Ready to Organize your iPhone Apps?

Whether we consciously realize it or not, it's frustrating and exhausting to use our phones when they're a disorganized mess and it's hard to find things!

When we organize our apps, it's faster to find the ones we want. And we're less likely to go down distracting rabbit holes. Our phones will also stress us out less! Our phones should be enjoyable, not something we fight with. Or an accidental time suck because we only notice our secret shame distracting app!

Let's get started on Organizing our iPhones!

Check this Out: What is the App Library on iPhone?

2:59

What's the deal with the App Library? Find out!

The App Library on iPhone is now the place where your apps "really" live. It contains the truth of the apps installed on your phone.

Now the Home Screen pages are something to have for decoration or a quick access point because you want to access apps there. Or you're just really accustomed to Home Screens and haven't changed anything yet.

In fact, you don't have to use more than one Home Screen at all. You can use the App Library to "hide" all the other apps and only keep out the "good" apps on your Home Screen and Dock at the bottom of the Home Screen.

The App Library contains all your apps, where they are organized automatically by app categories. Watch an App library walk-through, how apps are automatically organized there, and setting options.

  • Suggestions
  • Recently added
  • By Category

App Store categories are up to the developer to choose, not you. The arrangement is not 100% constant over time (say if you delete all of a type of app, it will go away.)

Tap on a category to expand and see the rest of the apps there. Use the top search bar to find and launch apps very fast because it's ONLY searching for apps installed on your device. (Unlike spotlight, which is looking for tons of stuff, locally, and on the web.)

If you need them, App Library settings are in the Settings app, under "Home Screen"

One and Done: Only use App Library and Never Organize Apps Again

2:14

Brittany shows you how you can never organize your iPhone apps again-- let your iPhone organize your apps automatically!

You can have all new apps automatically organized for you by exclusively using the App Library. Okay, you still need one Home Screen. But keep only what you want on that one Home Screen! For example, you could have only a photo and the dock, with no apps at all, if that's what you want.

If you don't really care where your apps are, but don't want your iPhone to look like the cluster it currently is, try using only the App Library. You can always go back to the cluster-thing if you hate the App Library.

Brittany will walk through how to setup to only use the App Library and turn off your regular home screens:

  • A setting to install new apps only in the App Library
  • Delete or hide all other app pages
  • And how to go back to using all the Home Screens if you change your mind

Enjoy having a lot less cluttered iPhone Home Screen, without a lot of extra work!

Duplicate App Icons — Now there are two of them?!

1:19

Because the App Library, not the Home Screen is the truth of what apps are on your phone, you can have multiple icons of the same app on your Home Screen at once.

Maybe you want a different Home Screen for work or personal or travel. You can have, say, the music icon on all of them, without putting the Music app in the dock. Have as many duplicate app icons as you like!

Brittany will show you how to have as many copies of an app icon on your screen as you like!

Enjoy moving apps wherever you want!

There's More than One Way to Place an App

0:45

There are so many ways to organize apps: by topic, when you might use it, minimalism-inspired, by color... What will help you remember where you put something? What will help you do what you want to do when you want to do it?

Your iPhone layout should be personal to you! What helps you feel good about your interactions with your phone?

Stay on Target: Make Activity-Specific App Home Screen Pages on iPhone

2:55

Evening time is hard. You want to relax before bedtime, but it's easy to slip into rabbit holes. How can we access apps that help us relax, without the ones that lead to doom scrolling all night long??

You can set up your iPhone to see the right apps, at the right time, by making an activity-specific app Home Screen page. That way you can focus on just the apps for what you're doing right now.

This is partly possible because now you can re-use app icons on many home pages, without compromising other home screens.

Brittany will show you how, by making a wind-down Home Screen to help get settled for sleep, but before you're ready to crawl into bed. This is a Home Screen specifically for when I want to unwind, but not send me down rabbit holes.

Your wind down screen can have whatever you like! But, to give you ideas, my wind down home screen has:

  • Pokémon Go
  • Texts
  • Routine shortcuts widget
  • My routines calendar
  • Music
  • Books
  • Audible
  • Tally
  • Battery widget

You can also use Focus modes to choose which app pages you can see in different focus modes. For example, a Wind Down Focus Mode that only shows me this screen at bedtime.

Examples of pages you might only want to see sometimes:

  • Work apps
  • Routines apps
  • Relaxing apps
  • Bedtime apps
  • Wind Down apps

Cloak and Drag 'er: Hide a Whole Page of Apps

1:15

You can have temporary or occasional screens of apps on your iPhone. Maybe you only want to use that page of apps when you're on vacation, or maybe you're just fed up with the clutter and distraction of having random apps everywhere. You can quickly hide those app screens!

Brittany will show you how to turn these app pages off! (Or back on, again!)

Examples of pages you might only want to see sometimes:

  • Work apps
  • Routines apps
  • Bedtime apps
  • Wind Down apps
  • Travel apps
  • Disneyland apps

Of course, you can also use Focus modes to choose which app pages you can see in different focus modes.

Hide and No Seek: Try Searching for Apps

1:53

You can search for an app at any time! Whether you've misplaced an app, don't want to look at it on your screen, or just because searching is fun and easy!

There's now a Search button on your iPhone Home Screen! It's the same search access you could use from swiping down from the middle of the Home Screen before.

You can use Search to access lots of things:

  • Suggestions from apps
  • Suggests Shortcuts actions
  • Content of many files on your device
  • Search for something on the web or in a specific app.

The search is great for searching for apps by name instead of hunting for them on your app screens. This can keep your Home Screen cleaner, if you don't need to keep as many apps visible.

Not everyone was excited to see search on the Home Screen, and there's a setting to turn this search "button" off or on, and Brittany will show you how!

Pimp my Dock: Customize Your Dock on iPhone

1:21

On your iPhone, the 'Dock' contains those app icons at the bottom of your Home Screen, closest to your thumbs. If you are using multiple home screens, the Dock is available on every page of apps.

This all makes them a convenient place to put four quick-access, frequently used apps. Or apps you'd like to remember to use more often, if you're trying to build better app-habits.

Brittany will show you how to customize your iPhone Dock icons. You can even add a folder of apps, if you'd like!
